The roadrunner is a bold and stubborn bird. It lives out its adventurous life in the Southwestern desert and doesn't seem to care who's watching. Mine stands right up front with its crest raised and its beak aimed straight ahead, that long speckled tail stretched out behind it in the sand. He looks like he has somewhere to be. I thought I was making this one just for myself, and maybe that's why it was so much fun. I got to pick colors because I liked them: mustard yellow, burnt orange, a dusty coral, sage green, and a soft gray, all laid over a cream background. After that, I played with lines and patterns. The mesas behind him break apart into blocks, hatch marks, and little grids. His body is black with quick white cuts running through it. The desert floor stays mostly open, with a few scratchy marks, a spindly shrub on one side and an agave on the other. I kept the textures rough, because a desert isn't smooth, and neither is that bird. What I love most is how simple it is. It's one stubborn bird in the place he belongs, drawn in a handful of warm colors. I made it for me, and somehow it keeps finding its way into other people's homes. Two years later, I'm still happy every time one ships.
